izabella

FT Alphaville’s Izabella Kaminska began her journalistic career by heading out, on her own initiative, to Kabul for a week to report on Afghanistan’s emerging business and banking industry while staying with mercenaries. It was a pretty big risk, given the situation in the country at that time, but she managed to avoid getting killed and succeeded in selling her story to a business magazine. This led to a graduate training scheme with Reuters in 2004, followed by stints as a natural gas reporter at Platts, an associate editor at BP’s internal magazine, and a producer at CNBC.

She joined FT’s Alphaville team in 2008, just as the financial crisis was in full swing, and is based in Geneva, Switzerland. Her interest in economics comes from a childhood fascination with ancient economies, particularly the Roman Empire, and studied Ancient History at University College London before doing a masters in Journalism at the London College of Printing.

Neil Irwin is a journalist and author, working as a columnist for the Washington Post and as the economics editor of Wonkblog, which is a spin-off blog from the Post that covers policy news and analysis. Irwin has worked at the Post since 2000s, covering topics such as the regional economy in Washington, internet companies, and economic development. Between 2007 and 2012, he covered economics and the Federal Reserve, and played a leading role in the Post’s coverage of the financial crisis and the subsequent recession. In addition to his work at the Post, he is a frequent guest on television, providing expert economic analysis on MSNBC, CNBC, and the PBS Newshour.

Recently, he authored a book about the reaction of the world’s central banks to the financial crisis called ‘The Alchemists: Three Central Bankers and a World on Fire’. As well as being a thrilling document of how these men dealt with the crisis, it also gives the whole thing some context by looking at the history of central banks from 17th century Sweden to the Age of Greenspan.
